Its official, the N.C. Azalea Festival has announced that the Avett Brothers, the hugely popular North Carolina trio, will be the featured performers at one of the two main festival concerts in 2011.
The Avetts will be playing at Trask Coliseum on the campus of UNCW on April 8.
Tickets go on sale Saturday.
Wilmington has finally found a venue big enough to hold the Avett Brothers.

The Avett Brothers are a a folk rock band originally from Concord, North Carolina. The band is made up of two brothers, Scott Avett and Seth Avett, who play the banjo and guitar respectively, and Bob Crawford who plays the stand-up bass. They are often joined on tour by cellist Joe Kwon.
Carrying on from Seth and Scott’s former rock band Nemo, the Avett Brothers sound combines bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk, and even ragtime.”
The Avett Brothers, who recently played a nearly sold-out three-night stand at the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach, have played Wilmington many times over the years since forming in 2001.
The last two times they played in Wilmington, however, in 2006 and 2007, the band had to play outdoors on the parking deck on Water Street because none of the downtown clubs they used to play could hold their fans any more.
The band has grown greatly in popularity as they have gone from a top regional act to reaching recognition nationally.
The Avett Brothers won the Americana Music Association Duo/Group of the Year and 2007 New/Emerging Artist of the Year awards on November 1, 2007.
They went on to sell out two nights at Asheville NC’s Orange Peel (total capacity: 942) and one night at the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center (capacity: 2,100) on Dec 28, 29 and 31st respectively. On January 8, 2008, the band debuted a video for the song “Paranoia in B-flat Major.”
On February 1, 2008, The Avett Brothers’ song “If It’s the Beaches” from The Gleam was featured on the NBC drama Friday Night Lights. On April 25, 2008 at the MerleFest music festival, The Avett Brothers announced that their newest EP, The Second Gleam, would be released on July 22, 2008.

July 26, 2008 marked one of the biggest shows the Avett Brothers had played. It was described as a “homecoming show” in celebration of their release of The Second Gleam EP. They sold out Koka Booth Amphitheatre at Regency Park in Cary, North Carolina (capacity: 7,000), playing with no opener for nearly two-and-a-half hours. Later in 2008, producer Rick Rubin signed the brothers to his American Recordings label which I and Love and You was released under.[2]
On December 15, 2008, the The Avett Brothers announced they would be opening for Dave Matthews Band for a portion of their spring tour 2009 across the southern United States from Virginia to Arizona.
The Avett Brothers also opened for Widespread Panic in 2009. On April 16, 2009, the Avett Brothers opened their tour in support of their newest album at the Vogue Theatre in Indianapolis, IN, playing to a sold-out crowd at the annual Rock for Riley benefit concert, an annual show with Wilco and My Morning Jacket.
From September 8 to October 8, 2009, in conglomeration with the upcoming release of the album, I and Love and You, the Avett Brothers released 13 short videos describing their music and fans. The videos show clips from past concerts, fan interviews and talks from the Avetts themselves. The Avett Brothers were named “the Artist to Watch of 2009” by Rolling Stone magazine.[3]
The Avett Brothers performed at the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival.[4] Also in 2009, the Avett Brothers performed on the Late Show with David Letterman,[5] the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,[6] and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.[7]
Their album I and Love and You peaked at #16 on the Billboard 200 best selling albums, #8 in best selling digital albums, #7 in rock albums, and #1 in folk albums.[8]
On January 21, 2010, the band aired on the PBS series Austin City Limits, ending with an especially rowdy version of “Talk On Indolence.” [9]
On February 9, 2010 it was announced the group would play Bonnaroo Music Festival on June 12 via the festival’s Myspace page.
The Avett Brothers were featured in Mountain Jam VI in Hunter, New York Mountain Jam VI.[10]
In 2010, the Avett Brothers are following John Mayer as an opening act for his world tour.
